Lukas Moodysson follows up the success of "Show Me Love" (Fucking Åmål) with a film exploring life within a 1970s commune. Elisabeth (Lisa Lindgren) leaves her husband Rolf (Michael Nyqvist) and moves in with her mild-mannered brother Göran (Gustaf Hammarsten) at his collective, bringing her two children along into the chaos.

Nothing is purely bad or purely good.

As the story unfolds, life within the collective appears no more chaotic than life outside it. Even the troubled Rolf begins to pull himself together, emerging as a surprisingly sympathetic character. This seems to be Moodysson’s core message: life exists in the many nuances between black and white.

As a nostalgia trip, "Together" works exceptionally well, filled with genuinely comedic moments. While some characterizations feel slightly heightened, the children’s performances are outstanding. A special mention must go to Carl Johan de Geer for his excellent production design.
