How do you sleep when you are haunted by your own conscience?

Trevor Reznik works in a machine shop where he is seen as an outsider due to his reclusive nature. What his coworkers don't know is that the terrifyingly emaciated Trevor hasn't slept in an entire year. He is on the verge of total collapse, both physically and mentally.

An accident occurs at the workplace due to Trevor's inattention, turning his colleagues against him. At the same time, mysterious notes with coded messages begin to appear in his apartment, deeply unsettling him.

He seeks comfort from Stevie, but as his paranoia grows, he eventually drives her away. What is the source of Trevor's suffering? Is it a conspiracy, or something far more personal?

A persistent and uncomfortably interesting film about the stubbornly haunting voice of the human conscience.

Editor's Note (2026): Christian Bale’s performance in The Machinist is now regarded as one of the most dedicated physical transformations in cinematic history. Iva’s analysis of the film as a story about the voice of conscience perfectly captures the essence of this psychological noir.
